Dr Viglione graduated from Sydney University with first-class honours in 1979. He began his internship at Prince Alfred Hospital in that year. Within one year of commencing his internship, he was introduced to surgery. As a resident at RGH Concord, he was exposed to orthopaedics, and, in particular, joint replacement surgery and was won over His first Orthopaedic registrar position was in 1983 and he commenced accredited training with AOA Orthopaedic Training Program in Sydney in 1985 at St George Hospital.
He graduated from the orthopaedic training program in 1988. In his first postgraduate year he completed a Fellowship in knee surgery with doctors Leo Pincewski and Mervyn Cross-two internationally highly regarded knee surgeons
